Stocking Up On Avocados During Quarantine

With all the uncertainty in the world right now, many are seeking to stock up their kitchens with nonperishables and other long-lasting foods. When it comes to produce, there are several options that keep for quite some time without spoiling. Avocados, however, are not one of them: it seems like avocados are ripe for mere hours before they overripen and turn soft.

If you want to stock up on avocados while self-quarantining though, there is a way. You can keep your avocados green for months if you follow these instructions. Instagram user Bethany Ugarte (@lilsipper) recently shared a hack on Instagram for those wanting to keep their avocados fresh. The secret? Freezing them.

While you may have known you can freeze mashed avocado for later use, did you know you can freeze the entire avocado? Bethany explains that she froze an avocado for 4 months, then took it out of the freezer, ran it under some hot water, and let it sit on the counter to defrost. When she cut it open, the fruit was bright green and perfectly ripe on the inside.

How To Keep Avocado Fresh For Months

  1. Once your avocados reach perfect ripeness, place them in the freezer.
  2. When you’re ready to eat it, run it under hot water and let it sit at room temperature for 30 minutes.
  3. Once the fruit is soft enough to give when you press your fingers into it, cut the skin in quarters with a knife.
  4. Carefully peel away the skin to expose a perfect avocado.
